Sustainable urbanization policies and strategies are posited as a major tool by which to achieve the sustainable development of growing towns and cities. A major challenge for sustainable urbanization policies and strategies is how to address the complexity of urbanization, especially the ongoing growth of informal settlements and slums in developing countries. It is acknowledged that those living their lives in such housing and settlements suffer greater levels of spatial, economic and social exclusion from the benefits of urbanization that other segments of the urban population. Using a case study approach, this paper examines the range of challenges associated with the growth of informal settlements and slums, seeking to understand how they are positioned via upgrading policies in city urbanization plans and strategies in Indonesia's third largest city, Bandung. The research finds that there has been a shift in kampung and slum upgrading policy from in-situ solutions to vertical housing towers which appear incompatible in accommodating the way of life practiced in kampung adaptive urbanism contexts. The manner in which city governments manage informal settlements and slums by seeking to reshape and restructure the lifestyles of residents to align with formal market measures has a major impact on existing disadvantaged communities. The paper concludes with a call for greater leadership, political commitment and recognition of contextual responses when developing slum upgrading policies set within urbanization policies and strategies branded as sustainable.

This study aims to determine: (1) the relationship of reading interest with reading comprehension, (2) the relationship of vocabulary mastery with reading comprehension, and (3) the relationship of reading interest and vocabulary mastery to reading comprehension. The method used in this research was descriptive method with a cor-relational technique. The population in this study were all students of class V elementary school 01 Pagi Bendungan Hilir, Central Jakarta, Indonesia amounting to 78 students. The sample were 38 with the sampling technique and taken randomly. The instruments used for data retrieval were through multiple-choice tests for the variables of vocabulary mastery (X2) and reading comprehension (Y) and a questionnaire for the variable of reading interest (X1). The results of the research showed (1) the research hypothesis is accepted because rob = 0.872> r table = 0.320. The coefficient of determination is (R2) = (0.872) 2 = 0.761 or 76.1%. This means that the contribution of reading interest (X1) amounted to 76.1% of the reading comprehension (Y). (2) the research hypothesis is accepted because rob = 0.797> r table = 0.320. The correlation coefficient between the vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of 0.797 is significant. (3) The research hypothesis is accepted because rob = 0.873> r table = 0.320. It can be concluded that the correlation coefficient between the variables of reading interest and vocabulary together with the reading comprehension of 0.873 is significant. The study concluded (1) there is a positive correlation between reading interest with reading comprehension, (2) there is a positive relationship between vocabulary with reading comprehension, and (3) there is a relationship between reading interest and vocabulary mastery to reading comprehension.
