Aims: To investigate the protective effects of betanin and allicin against adriamycin (ADR)-induced cardiotoxicity. Study Design: Experimental animal model. Place and Duration of Study: King Abdul-Aziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; 10 days. Methodology: Adult female Wistar rats were allocated to the following groups (n = 10 per group): Control, received water, a standard diet for 10 days and i.p normal saline on day 8; ADR, intraperitoneal injection with 15 mg/kg ADR as a single dose on day 8; ADR+BE, betanin (20 mg/kg) administration followed by i.p. injection of ADR (15 mg/kg); ADR+ALL, allicin (20 mg/kg) administration followed by i.p. injection of ADR; and ADR+BE+ALL, equal volumes of betanin and allicin followed by ADR (15 mg/kg). Hemodynamic characteristics of the cardiovascular system and electrocardiography were evaluated. Blood samples were obtained to assess cardiac enzymes; cardiac homogenates were processed to analyze oxidative and antioxidant parameters and low-grade inflammatory indicators. Histopathological evaluation of heart tissues was also conducted. Results: Rats pre-administered betanin and allicin were protected from ADR-associated ischemia based on the significant (P < .05) shortening of QT, QTC interval, QRS, and T peak Tend interval compared with the ADR group. Betanin and allicin pre-treatment significantly decreased the ADR-induced elevated serum creatine kinase-MB and lactate dehydrogenase levels. ADR-elevated cardiac oxidative parameters, along with the serum concentrations of the tumor necrosis factor-alpha and the cardiac transforming growth factor-beta, were significantly inhibited by betanin and allicin. Histopathological findings confirmed the biochemical results. Betanin and allicin reduced ADR-induced heart damage by inhibiting several pathways, including those of oxidative stress and inflammation. Conclusion: Betanin and allicin may be promising cardioprotective agents owing to their antioxidant and cytoprotective properties and could thus be used as adjuvant treatment for cancer therapy.

In recent times, nutraceuticals have been used extensively to identify promising feed additives for the improvement of the aquaculture industry through the enhancement of growth and survival rates, potentiation of the immune responses, and fortification of the resistance against infectious bacterial diseases. In this study, Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were fed with diets supplemented with quinoa seeds (QU) or prickly pear fruit peel (PP) at the dose levels of 10% or 20% of the diet. After 45 days of the feeding trial, the fish were exposed to Aeromonas sobria (A. sobria) challenge. The pre-challenge indices indicated that both supplements mediated a significant improvement in most of the estimated parameters, including survival rate, antioxidant status, hematological and immunological indices, and hepatoprotective potential. These effects were recorded in the groups fed with high doses of the supplements (20%). The least changes were observed in the QU10-supplemented fish. In the spleen tissue, the TGF-β gene was upregulated in the PP10-, PP20- and QU20-supplemented groups, while the expression of the IFN-γ gene remained unaffected in all the supplemented groups, except for the PP20-supplemented group, which showed an upregulation. After the challenge with A. sobria, the relative survival percentage was improved by the supplementation of PP and QU, particularly in the PP20-supplemented group, possibly via the promotion of immunological responses, hepatoprotective potency, and modulation of the studied genes. Moreover, the morphological structure of the tissues showed marked recovery. The findings suggest that Nile tilapia fed with different levels of PP peel and QU seeds, particularly at the level of 20%, enhanced the immune response in fish and improved their resistance against A. sobria infection.

Pregnancy involves some structural and physiological adjustments to achieve an optimal outcome for the fetus and its mother. The magnitude of these changes is influenced by number of fetuses in utero. This research was designed to compare serum biochemical and ovarian morphometric changes associated with singleton and twin pregnancies in Maradi goats. Using Richardson formula, 2.1 × [CRL (cm) + 17], twelve (12) ovarian and blood samples (7 single and 5 twin) from mid gestation (≈70-100 dGA) pregnant goats were purposively selected. Ovarian weights, ovarian diameters, serum biochemistry and levels of ovarian sex hormones were determined and analyzed using standard procedures. Twin pregnant goats had higher (p < 0.05) left ovarian weights, average ovarian weight, left ovarian diameters, average ovarian diameter, serum calcium and inorganic phosphorus levels compared with singleton pregnant goats. There was no significant variation (p > 0.05) in the mean crown-rump length, mean gestational age, mean fetal weight, right ovarian weights, right ovarian diameters, serum concentrations of sodium, potassium, chloride, urea, creatinine, AST, ALT, total protein, estrogen and progesterone between sinlgeton and twin pregnant Red Maradi goats. Ovarian sections from the twin bearing mid gestation goats had more growing follicles and fewer primordial follicles compared with the singleton bearing goats. Findings from this study indicate that twin pregnancy, which could be genetically programmed, has the tendency to affect ovarian follicles development, ovarian morphometrics and calcium metabolism in mid gestation in Red Maradi goats.
