Banana leaves are traditionally used to clean iron plates. This study evaluated the cleansing action of banana leaves by subjecting iron surfaces to a sliding regime on prepared leaves. Iron plates weighing 9, 16, and 23 N were soiled with polyethylene film at 135°C, 183°C, and 230°C. The surface morphology of banana leaves consisted of parallel ridges running along the leaf axis. Stomata and air pockets, the main biomimetic microstructures of banana leaves, were located between the spaces of the ridges. The cleansing action of the banana leaf surfaces (defined as dislodging of soil from the iron plate) was explained in terms of adhesive forces among the iron plate, polyethylene soil, and surface microstructure. The adhesion forces between the polyethylene soil and microstructures were the most significant. The operating forces were bio-adhesive in nature. The cleansing action increased as the loads and temperatures increased; the greatest cleansing action was obtained at 230°C (16 N). The morphological changes in the stomata and the air pockets during cleansing at different temperatures were tabulated.

A B S T R A C TEnteromorpha prolifera, a marine solid waste abundantly available in Asia, was used as a lowcost precursor to prepare activated carbon (EPAC) using pyrophosphoric acid, H 4 P 2 O 7 , as a chemical activating agent. The effects of impregnation ratio, activation temperature and activation time on the specific surface area of the activated carbon were investigated through response surface methodology. The optimum preparation conditions were described as follows: impregnation ratio, 1.26; activation temperature, 455˚C; activation time, 48 min. The characteristics of EPAC were examined by nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The total pore volume and specific surface area of EPAC under optimum conditions were identified as 1.365 cm 3 /g and 1124.1 m 2 /g. The EPAC possessed high BJH pore volume, 1.276 cm 3 /g and methylene blue value, 330 mg/g, indicating the existence of abundant mesopores. The adsorption kinetic data of ciprofloxacin were well fitted to pseudo-second-order model, displaying a monolayer adsorption capacity for CIP of 216.55 mg/g. The equilibrium data can be well described by Langmuir model. The dominant sorption mechanism is electrostatic attraction.

A B S T R A C TSugarcane bagasse (SCB) and beet pulp (BP) are promising low cost natural wastes with cellulose-lignin polymeric structure. Their adsorption properties for the removal of Pb(II) and Na(I) under variable conditions of solution pH, time of equilibrium, weight of adsorbent, and metal ion concentration were investigated. These two adsorbents were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectra, Scanning electron microscope (SEM), and X-ray diffraction. SCB and BP showed high percentage of extraction of Pb(II) (100.0 ± 1.0% and 100.0 ± 0.5%) and Na(I) (97.5 ± 0.1% and 98.9 ± 0.1%), respectively. The adsorption isotherm data for Pb(II) and Na(I) ions by the two adsorbents were modeled using Langmuir and Freundlich equations. Furthermore, the adsorption kinetics data were best fitted with the pseudo-second-order type. Finally, the proposed method has been successfully applied for removal of Pb(II) from environmental water samples. Adapting batch condition, this application revealed high efficiency and good precision as indicated by recovery values 95.2-103.2% and RSD% = 0.339-1.333%. Moreover, SCB and BP were used to reduce sodium ion concentrations from irrigation water for improvement of plants production.
