Bambusicola loculata sp. nov. (Bambusicolaceae) from bamboo

Abstract: A new ascomycete species, Bambusicola loculata, inhabiting decaying bamboo, is introduced based on morpho-molecular studies. Bambusicola loculata is characterized by immersed, dark, stromatic and loculate ascostromata, bitunicate, cylindrical-clavate asci and 1-septate, hyaline, narrowly fusiform ascospores, surrounded by an inconspicuous mucilaginous sheath. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses of combined LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF1 gene sequence data as well as morphological characters show that our new tax… Show more

“…Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, cylindrical, short pedicellate, apically rounded with an ocular chamber. Ascospores overlapping uni-to bi-seriate, brown to reddish brown, with paler end cells, fusiform with acute ends, septate, smooth-walled (Hawksworth and Boise 1985;Phookamsak et al 2015b;Jayasiri et al 2019) (Dai et al 2012(Dai et al , 2015(Dai et al , 2017Thambugala et al 2017;Yang et al 2019a). Herein, we report a new Bambusicola species isolated from submerged wood in China.…”

“…Dai & K.D. Hyde in having narrowly fusiform, 1-septate, hyaline ascospores with narrowly rounded ends and an inconspicuous mucilaginous sheath (Dai et al 2015). However, they can be distinguished by their ascus characteristics (cylindric-clavate, bi-to tri-seriate, 80-105 × 8-13 μm in B. loculata vs. cylindrical, overlapping biseriate or partially uniseriate, 80-126.5(-202) × 7-9.5(-10.5) μm in B. aquatica).…”

“…Bambusicolous fungi are highly diverse and distributed in various families within Pleosporales. Since 2015, over 85 bambusicolous species have been introduced in Pleosporales [ 3 , 27 , 33 , 39 , 41 , 45 , 46 , 49 , 50 , 52 , 55 , 59 , 63 , 68 , 71 , 74 , 76 , 77 , 78 , 79 , 80 , 100 , 104 , 117 , 118 , 119 , 120 , 121 , 122 , 123 , 124 , 125 , 126 , 127 , 128 , 129 , 130 , 131 , 132 ]. Even though novel taxa have been continuedly introduced in recent years, studies into the diversity of bambusicolous fungi correlating with specific bamboo genera are still limited due to the lack of host species identification.…”
