Balun design for uniplanar broad band double balanced mixer

Abstract: A novel balun based on an asymmetric coplanar waveguide with finite ground plane (ASYCPWFGP) to coplanar strip (CPS) transition is presented. A return loss better than 16dB is obtained up to 50GHz. The baluns are combined with four silicon Schottky barrier crossover diodes to yield a planar doublebalanced mixer (DBM) which demonstrates an ultra-broadband performance up to 40GHz.

“…In communication systems, CPW in a ground-signal-ground (GSG) configuration is normally used for designing amplifiers [2][3][4][5], frequency doublers [6,7], mixers [8,9], power DACs (PDACs) [10,11] and interposer connections between different components [12,13]. Being different from CPW, CPS as well as ACPS are in a ground-signal (GS) configuration and they are used for designing baluns [14][15][16][17], antennas [18][19][20], and the electrodes of Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs) [21][22][23].…”

“…Briefly, CPSs support all of the advantages of the conventional coplanar waveguides. Furthermore, the structure of CPSs is very useful for radio frequency and microwave integrated circuits (MICs), especially balanced circuits due to its inherent balanced nature [1]. Various symmetric and asymmetric CPSs on single or multilayer substrates were analyzed to obtain closed-form expressions for quasi-TEM parameters using quasi-static methods [2][3][4][5][6] and to determine dispersion characteristics of CPSs with the use of full-wave methods [7][8][9].…”

“…In addition, CPSs are useful for fabricating lines with high characteristic impedance, as higher impedance is easier to realise with CPSs than with CPWs [1]. Furthermore, the balanced structure of CPSs is useful in applications such as printed-antenna feeding [2], uniplanar mixers [3], and optoelectric devices [4]. However, relatively little research has been done on CPSs as compared to CPWs.…”

“…Existing works commonly realize the circuit of CMOS VCOs in crosscoupled configuration due to ease of implementation and relaxed start-up. Also, the circuit of a conventional CMOS QVCO has been implemented by connecting a pair of cross-coupled VCOs with four quadrature-coupled MOSFETs in order to achieve the desired quadrature phase shift [3][4][5][6]. Hence, the power consumption of a QVCO is at least twice that of a cross-coupled VCO.…”
