Ballistic behavior of high hardness perforated armor plates against 7.62mm armor piercing projectile

Abstract: a b s t r a c tIn this paper, some of the important defeating mechanisms of the high hardness perforated plates against 7.62 Â 54 armor piercing ammunition were investigated. The experimental and numerical results identified three defeating mechanisms effective on perforated armor plates which are the asymmetric forces deviates the bullet from its incident trajectory, the bullet core fracture and the bullet core nose erosion. The initial tests were performed on the monolithic armor plates of 9 and 20 mm thickn… Show more

“…This hard-brittle material proved to be more effective in inducing bend-stresses in the penetrating core than the more ductile, but less hard material, ADI-400. Bend stresses have a great influence on penetrating core fracture, a major factor in defeating the incoming projectile [16,22,23,26]. Furthermore, it can be seen that the thicker (9 versus 7 mm) ADI-275 perforated plate has a higher effectiveness than a thinner one.…”

“…In 2014, Kilic et al [13] published a paper about "ballistic behavior of high hardness perforated armor plates against 7.62 mm armor piercing projectile" experimentally and numerically. In this study, the numerical models were established using Lagrange discretization in LS-DYNA with several cases counting with and without bullet failure model.…”

“…This adds to the vehicle weight, limiting its payload. Several alternatives were found, such as ceramic armor or perforated plates [11][12][13]. Although their mass effectiveness is higher than that of RHA, their cost and production time are significant.…”
