Ball Bearings as Sensors for Systematical Combination of Load and Failure Monitoring

Abstract: In modern machine architecture, complex mechanical components guarantee the function of the system. Specific maintenance rates reduce maintenance effort and cost. The combination of load and failure monitoring provide data to establish an individual maintenance rate depending on component specific remaining lifetime. In addition, algorithms can optimise the operation strategy to relieve the weakest components and extend the system lifetime. Adapted ball bearings contain a sensor mechanism depending on the rela… Show more

“…Physical effect catalogues, e.g. according to Koller (1998) or Roth (2000) respectively, were developed to identify a physical effect or a chain of physical effects realising a given function within the considered system borders. According to Vorwerk-Handing (2021), these are in principle suitable for establishing a connection between a variable of interest and potential measured variables, but have two main limitations if one aims to identify cause-effect relationships in form of effect chains.…”

“…For load measurement using the electrical impedance of rolling bearings, the effect is used that, under elastohydrodynamic operating conditions, the dielectric lubricant separates the surfaces of the rolling element and the outer or inner ring, respectively (Schirra et al, 2018). This setup of two conductive bodies separated by a dielectric effectively creates a measurable capacitance.…”

“…Here the focus is especially on rolling bearings, since these are machine elements which are used in almost every application (Vogel and Kirchner, 2019). Several approaches using different technologies have been presented in the literature (Brecher et al, 2014;Brecher et al, 2019;Schirra et al, 2018;Winkelmann, 2014). The data measured with the sensing machine elements is used to perform predictive maintenance or to increase productivity by monitoring the process.…”
