Abstract: Synesius’ Encomium calvitii can be interpreted as an excellent example of late-antique satyr, which aims to denounce the decline of contemporary society by criticising its most prominent members; philosophers, rhetoricians, religious people, soldiers, romanized barbarians, characters of dubious morality.
