Balancing Urban Expansion and Ecological Connectivity through Ecological Network Optimization—A Case Study of ChangSha County

Abstract: The counties have experienced urban expansion and landscape pattern fragmentation. As carriers of new urbanization, the balanced development between urban expansion and landscape connectivity in the counties needs to be emphasized. The uncontrolled expansion of land should be discouraged and planners need to clarify land use expansion patterns. Using Changsha County as the study area, the characteristics of the landscape pattern between 2000 and 2020 were analyzed. The morphological spatial pattern analysis an… Show more

“…Related studies pointed out that land type and vegetation cover were key factors affecting the quality of biological habitats [77], which was consistent with our results. Furthermore, the results showed a strong correlation between land use type and distance from roads and towns, further confirming that highintensity development and construction and densely populated areas largely exacerbated the fragmentation of ecological patches and weakened landscape connectivity [80,81].…”

“…The site has five entrances and exits that allow for convenient transportation via various commuting modes. Additionally, the campus is well-equipped with teaching and public service facilities, providing a conducive environment for students and staff to learn, research, live, and receive services (75). .…”

“…In addition, some researchers have considered urbanization and human activity, both of which put stress on the ecological environment (e.g., population density[ 29 ] and the amount of nighttime light [ 6 , 30 ]), when modifying ecological resistance surfaces to increase the accuracies of the simulated spatial distributions of ecological corridors [ 31 ]. However, in the past, the hotspots of ecological network research mainly included urban areas [ 21 , 32 ], arid or semi-arid areas [ 33 , 34 ], agricultural and pastoral intertwined zones [ 17 , 35 ], and other areas with significant ecological characteristics. In contrast, few studies have been conducted on resource cities with a high degree of industrialization and a more serious ecological environment.…”
