Balancing the efficacy and toxicity of chemotherapy in colorectal cancer

Abstract: As the therapeutic options for the treatment of colorectal cancer have expanded over the past 20 years, so has the complexity of decision making. The goals of treatment in the palliative, adjuvant and neoadjuvant settings vary and it is not only the efficacy of drugs that influence treatment decisions. Age, performance status, the presence of significant comorbidities and the different treatment regimens and strategies provide medical oncologists with an array of options to attempt to maximize patients' qualit… Show more

“…An important aim of adjunct treatment in oncology patients is decreasing chemotherapy toxicity, since side effects lead to increased intervals between chemotherapy cycles or require dose reduction, and these changes have a negative effect on treatment results (6). The options for treating such disorders remain limited (7,8).…”

“…Thus, the new concept of combined chemoprevention by multiple agents or by the consumption of "whole foods" has become an increasingly attractive area of study (Mehta et al, 2010). Several reports have described the ability of these naturally derived compounds to modulate the process of carcinogenesis; either by blocking or reversing, with nominal cytotoxicity (Braun and Seymour, 2011;Lee et al, 2011). For example the use of natural compounds in combination with 5-FU may provide effective colorectal cancer treatment by enhancing tumoricidal activity while reducing dose-related toxicity and resistance.…”

“…However, despite remarkable progress in these approaches, effective therapeutic outcome is minimal owing to the incomplete eradication of the disease and unfavorable side effects, which regularly impede effective treatment (Braun and Seymour, 2011). 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is one of the most commonly used therapeutic agents in first-line therapy against colorectal cancer.…”
