Balancing Instruction and Construction in Virtual World Learning

Abstract: In game-based learning and in teaching using virtual worlds, designers creating the products and teachers providing them to students are both faced with a dualism between instruction and construction. Open-ended virtual worlds may provide authentic settings and inspire experimentation; on the other hand a lack of guidance may result in learners losing direction. The chapter conducts a narrative review of concepts across disciplines that describe the dilemma and imply certain instructional design strategies. Ma… Show more

“…The overview of the learning theory is very brief, and little information is provided; however, the author discusses multiple theories, and the publication year, 1995, indicates that the topic was becoming more popular in education-related literature as well as discussions on educational reform in the United States. 17 More recent literature by Jones, Flohr, and Martin also discusses constructivism as an approach to learning by providing different examples related to inquiry and the potential impact of constructivism. For example, the authors cite Angela Zhang, a high school student who pursued research and knowledge in the field of cancer by reading peer-reviewed articles and learning new terminology and, eventually, understanding more complex research.…”

“…Here, the use of programmed, automated, scripted object in a simulation is a 'bot' which can become a NPC where appropriate responses can be anticipated and planned to give the semblance of a suitable level of artificial intelligence . Martens and Maciuszek (2013) present an eight-degree scale of automation in virtual worlds: "(1) The computer offers no assistance; the human must do it all; (2) task;…”
