Balanced TH1 and TH2 immunopotentiating effects of silicates partly containing nanoparticles present in calcined serpentine

Abstract: Calcined Serpentine (CS) is used in various formulations of alternative systems of medicine as a tonic to vital organs and as an anti-inflammatory agent. The process of calcination or incineration is believed to render non-toxic, gently absorbable, adaptable and digestible properties to the mineral compounds. The present study characterized CS and also evaluated its immunostimulatory potential. CS was characterized by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction, atomic absorption spe… Show more

“…The differential expression of CCR7 between groups may be associated with the capacity of D n ManPrup3 to stimulate complete DC maturation, activation and DC survival, leading to interactions with other immune cells and the differentiation of naive T‐cells . Our results also show that the presence of D n ManPrup3 induces specific T‐ and B‐cell proliferation with a Th2 response pattern (significant increases in IL‐13 and IL‐4, with low levels of IL‐10) as reported previously . These results suggest that the T‐cell epitope of Pru p 3 in the GDPs stimulates DC maturation and allergen‐specific T‐cell proliferation, inducing an immune response similar to that of the native allergen.…”

“…The potential for such effects to specifically impact allergic disease processes has been illustrated by a few studies. For example, ingestion of SiNP and PtNP were associated with increases in antigen-specific antibody production following immunization of mice and rabbits (956,958). Interestingly, oral administration of AgNP has been shown to block the development of oral tolerance to OVA in sensitized mice, directly demonstrating the potential for metal nanomaterials to augment allergic disease resulting from an often overlooked route of exposure (800).…”
