Abstract. Rock salt has remarkable mechanical properties and high economic importance; however, the strength of salt compared to other rocks makes it a rather vulnerable material. Human activities could lead to acceleration of the dissolution of soluble rock salt and collapse of subsurface caverns. Although sinkhole development can be considered a local geological disaster regarding the characteristic size of surface depressions, the deformations can result in catastrophic events. In this study we report the spatiotemporal evolution of surface deformation in the Solotvyno salt mine area in Ukraine based on Sentinel-1 interferometric synthetic aperture radar measurements. Although the mining operations were finished in 2010, several sinkholes have been opened up since then. Our results show that despite the enormous risk management efforts, the sinkholes continue to expand with a maximum line-of-sight deformation rate of 5 cm/yr. The deformation time series show a rather linear feature, and unfortunately no slowdown of the processes can be recognized based on the investigated 4.5-year-long data set. We utilized both ascending and descending satellite passes to discriminate the horizontal and vertical deformations, and our results revealed that vertical deformation is much more pronounced in the area. Analytical source modeling confirmed that the complex deformation pattern observed by Sentinel-1 radar interferometry has a direct connection to the former mining activity and is confined to the mining territory. With the 6 d repetition time of Sentinel-1 observations, the evolution of surface changes can be detected in quasi real time, which can facilitate disaster response and recovery.

The objective of this study is to analyze the influence of the Pokuttia deep fault on tectonics and the oiland gas-bearing structures in the southeastern part of the Ukrainian Carpathians. Methodology. It is presented in a detailed complex analysis of the geological-geophysical data in the given area. Results. The influence in the Pokuttia deep fault on the flysch structure has revealed itself in the Boryslav-Pokuttia nappe as a series of dislocations with a break of continuity at the northeastern orientation at the boundary between the Hutsulkyi and Boikivskyi segments with the structures horizontally displaced 10 km off and up to 1.5 km vertically-left-strike slip fault. In the Skyba nappe this is truncation of its front part of the Hutsulskyi segment. In the Dukla-Chornohora nappe and the Bitlya-Svydovets sub-nappe these are sigmoid curvature of their parts in the fault zone with amplitudes of horizontal displacements of up to 10 km. As a result, the Krasnoshora and Hoverla units are joined into a single sub-nappe, and the thrust-folds of the Bitlya-Svydovets sub-nappe to a considerable extent are overlapped by it and by the Skupiv subnappe. Owing to post-overthrusting vertical movements the Hutsulskyi segment was uplifted during Pliocene-Pleistocene. The rise of the area with the Duklya-Chornohora nappe was the most intensive. The structures of the Bitlya-Svydovets sub-nappe are fragmentally outcropped from under it. In the territory of Romania the nappes structurally correspond from the north-the thrust-sheet with olistostrome Slon in the Lower Verkhovyna deposits of Oligocene, and from the south-tectonic units Toroklezh and Makla. The Pokuttia fault displaces the Precarpathian regional minimum (amplitude of about 10 km), and the Uzhok deep fault with the signs of right-shift. There is a perceptible impact of the Pokuttia fault on the sub meridional Radekhiv-Viktoriv fault. Sites of intersections of the mentioned faults, so-called knots, if the traps are available, are known to be favourable zones for hydrocarbon accumulation on commercial scales. In the light of new data on the geological structure of the region, the perspective estimate is raised for the distinguished structures Vorohta-Yasynia (Lazeshchynska, Yasynska and Voronenkivska), as well as Semakivska and Hryniavska, where commercial influxes of hydrocarbons were obtained. This observation also concerns the structures of the basement of the Lopushna subzone of the outer zone of the Carpathean Foredeep under the overthrust of the Carpathians. Scientific novelty. For the first time, using new geological data it was possible to prove the influence of the Pokuttia fault in the zone of its action in a form of the left-strike-slip on the structures of the flysch cover. Late Mesozoic Intracontinental Deformation in the Northern Margin of the North China Craton: A Case Study From the Shangyi Basin, Northwestern Hebei Province, China

During the late Mesozoic, the East Asian continent underwent a complex tectonic history due to multiple episodes of plate convergence. How the crust responds to the multiple plate convergence in the North China Craton (NCC) remains unclear. Here we undertook field geological investigations and fault-slip vectors analysis of the Shangyi Basin in the western Yanshan fold and thrust belt, northern margin of the NCC. Combined with new geochronological data, we delineate three phases of intracontinental deformation in the area: 1) NW-SE compression during the Late Jurassic to earliest Cretaceous (ca. 151–141 Ma); 2) NW-SE extension during the middle–late Early Cretaceous (ca. 135–110 Ma); and 3) NE-SW compressional deformation later than 110 Ma. The early NW-SE compression controlled the present bulk architecture of the basin, and the subsequent two tectonic events only caused limited reworking of the previous structures. Through balanced cross-section restoration, we estimate the horizontal shortening ratio of the crust in the study area is over 27% due to the NW-SE compression. Moreover, the contribution of tectonic shortening from the north side of the basin is greater than that from the south side. NW-SE compressional deformation is consistent in time with the episode B of the Yanshanian movement (Yanshanian B), which may be influenced by the subduction of the Paleo-Pacific plate beneath East Asia and the closure of the Mongol-Okhosk Ocean. Subsequent NW–SE extension is likely to be associated with the destruction of the NCC during the Early Cretaceous. Extension may result from the roll-back of the Paleo-Pacific plate and post-orogenic collapse of the Mongol-Okhotsk belt. The last NE-SW compressional event may be linked to the remote effect of the final collision between the Qiangtang and Lhasa terranes.
