Balance training (proprioceptive training) for patients with rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract: There is no research available examining the efficacy of balance training alone in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The effectiveness and safety of balance training to improve functional capacity of these patients remains unclear. We suggest that future research should give more importance to balance training by either increasing the number and duration of sessions or investigating its efficacy alone.

“…2 Balance exercises improve balance and reduce falls 2 3 ; however, the reporting of exercise prescription variables has been incomplete. 4 Balance exercise to date has been poorly defined and described using variable terminology, such as balance enhancing exercise, 5 balance training, 6 proprioceptive training 7 and neuromuscular training. 8 Common to these terms is the definition of exercises that challenge the postural control system.…”

“…The complex pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis involves T cells that stimulate monocytes, macrophages and synovial fibroblasts, which lead to the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, prostaglandins and chemokines as well as the stimulation of B cells. Pro-inflammatory mediators promote and perpetuate chronic immune-mediated inflammation of soft tissue, resulting in joint destruction (2,(5)(6)(7)(8) .…”
