Balance confidence and activity of community-dwelling patients with transtibial amputation

Abstract: Abstract-The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between balance confidence and community-based physical activity. Twenty-two community-dwelling patients with right or left unilateral transtibial amputation who reported no falls in the past 6 mo completed the Activities-Specific Balance Confidence Scale (ABC) and wore a StepWatch Activity Monitor for 7 consecutive d in the community. Subjects were subsequently stratified as low (<3,000 steps/d) or high (3,000 steps/ d) activity groups. Bal… Show more

“… Physical activity correlated with comfortable walking speed, 6MWT, and step width variability, and was inversely correlated with step length variability of the prosthetic leg and of the sound leg. Mandel (2016) [ 53 ] Balance confidence and activity of community-dwelling patients with transtibial amputation 22 participants (All BK) StepWatch (P. Ankle) Activity level – steps (7 days) Examine the relationship between community-based physical activity and balance confidence in people with BK amputation who have low fall-risk. There was a positive correlation between self-perceived balance confidence and community-based physical activity.…”

“…Moreover, balance confidence at discharge from rehabilitation following a first amputation is a predictor of social participation three months after discharge (4), with low social participation significantly limiting quality of life (5,6). Low balance confidence is also associated with lower levels of physical activity (7).…”

“…5,6 Low balance confidence is also associated with lower levels of physical activity. 7 Among people who use LLP, low balance confidence may be, in part, independent from functional ability; balance confidence and performance-based measures of balance are only moderately correlated. 8 following discharge from rehabilitation, persons with a lower limb prosthesis continue to improve walking ability, while balance confidence does not continue to improve, 4 suggesting the two may be independent.…”
