Risk Factors for, and Prediction of, Shoulder Pain in Young Badminton Players: A Prospective Cohort Study

Background: Shoulder pain (SP) caused by hitting the shuttlecock is common in young badminton players. The objectives of the present study were to predict the risk factors for SP in young badminton players, and to determine the optimal risk factor cut-off that best discriminates those players who are at higher risk of suffering from SP. Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted with 45 under-17 badminton players who participated in the Spanish Championship. Data were collected on anthropometric age, sports history, sagittal spinal curves, range of motion (ROM) and maximum isometric strength of shoulder. After 12 months, players completed a SP history questionnaire. Bayesian Student’s t-analysis, binary logistic regression analysis and ROC analysis were performed. Results: Overall, 18 (47.4%) players reported at least one episode of SP. The shoulder internal rotation (SIR) ROM showed the strongest association (OR = 1.122; p = 0.035) with SP. The SIR ROM has an excellent ability to discriminate players at increased risk for SP (p = 0.001). The optimal cut-off for SIR ROM, which predicts players with an 81% probability of developing SP, was set at 55° (sensitivity = 75.0%, specificity = 83.3%). Conclusions: The young badminton players who had a shoulder internal rotation ROM of 55° or less have a higher risk of SP one year later.

Research ArticleIJSMR (2022) 5:25 Mechanism for shoulder pain and injury in elite badminton playersPurpose: to detect the mechanisms for shoulder pain and injury during forehand overhead stroke using the questionnaire and 2D video analysis. Methods and Materials: Participants were 48 university badminton players (aged 18-22) with national tournament level who had no current shoulder injuries. A questionnaire investigation and a forehand overhead clear test were performed. The angle of arm slot at the moment of hit was calculated from 2D videos analysis using Image J software. Data were compared between badminton players with shoulder problems and those without. Results: There were 6 badminton players reported a history of shoulder injury that all of them were offensive players. 11 badminton players (8 offensive players and 3 defensive players) reported present shoulder pain that offensive players showed 7.33 times more likely to sustain present shoulder pain than defensive players (OR = 7.33, 95%CI: 1.55-34.70, p = 0.007; Fisher's Exact test: p = 0.012). Moreover, offensive players with present shoulder pain had significantly greater score of VAS (visual analog scale) than defensive players (74.0 mm ± 14.2 mm vs 44.6 mm ± 24.4 mm, p = 0.04). Significant differences of arm slot angle were found among badminton players with shoulder pain free, history of shoulder injury and present shoulder pain (35.74o ± 4.85 o vs 42.90 o ± 11.89 o vs 37.81 o ± 6.40 o , F = 3.27, p = 0.047). Conclusion: Offensive badminton players are more likely to suffer from shoulder injury and strong intensity of shoulder pain. Greater arm slot angle of hit phase might be the mechanism leading to shoulder problems in badminton players.For improving shoulder re-injury prevention and rehabilitation protocols, our findings should be taken into consideration by physiotherapists, physicians and coaches.

Introduction: Professional aerobic exercises require high performance from exercisers. Injuries are common during their execution. Understanding the causal reasons is essential for prevention methods to reduce athletes’ injuries. Objective: Investigate the influential factors of ligament injuries caused by aerobic exercise. Methods: This paper analyzes the injuries caused by aerobic exercise through mathematical statistics. Time, course, degree of injury, location of the injury, cause, early treatment time, primary approach, treatment methods, recovery conditions, and speed in recovery time of sports injuries were investigated. Results: Injuries are mainly concentrated at the hip, knee, and ankle joint level; sprains are the first injuries, followed by muscle strains, lower back muscle contractures, kneecap deformities, and joint ligament injuries. The leading causes of injuries were poor warm-up, excessive load, technical errors, and fatigue. Conclusion: Various physiotherapy methods can improve the recovery rate from ligament injuries. This method can also improve sports ligament injuries’ prevention and treatment effects. Evidence Level II; Therapeutic Studies - Investigating the result.
