“…Similar findings were reported by Brown et al in a study that identified risk factors for UUI in 2763 elderly postmenopausal women (mean age, 67 years) with coronary heart disease; the prevalence of ≥ 1 episode of UUI (OR = 2.0, 95% CI: 1.1–3.6) or MUI (OR = 2.4, 95% CI: 1.5–3.9) per week, but not SUI, was significantly associated with ≥ 2 self‐reported UTIs in the last year. In community‐dwelling, Swedish women aged ≥ 80 years, bacteriuria was significantly associated with UUI (adjusted OR = 3.4; 95% CI: 1.5–7.6), but not MUI (adjusted OR = 1.9; 95% CI: 0.8–4.2) or SUI (adjusted OR = 0.8; 95% CI: 0.3–2.3) after adjusting for mobility and oestrogen use . A case–control study conducted in Italy by Parazzini and associates reported a significant association between recurrent UTIs and UUI (adjusted OR = 2.3; 95% CI: 1.6–3.1), as well as MUI (adjusted OR = 1.9; 95% CI: 1.5–2.4) and SUI (adjusted OR = 1.3; 95% CI: 1.0–1.8), after adjusting for age .…”

“…To identify patients potentially at risk for postoperative GNB SSI, all those with at least one UTC risk factor underwent urine culture 3-5 days before surgery. Risk criteria were established based on literature review, guideline recommendations, and expert consensus, as follows: Urinary incontinence has been related to asymptomatic bacteriuria in elderly patients [19], and was found to be an independent risk factor for developing SSI after spinal surgery [13]. • Preoperative hospital stay longer than 7 days.…”

“…However, it is often difficult to differentiate between acute cystitis and ASB in daily practice [7]. This may be due to patients' difficulties in communicating their symptoms because of cognitive impairments or when the elderly patient presents diffuse systemic symptoms without apparent focal urinary signs.…”
