Bacteriophage‐based cocktail modulates selected immunological parameters and post‐challenge survival of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Abstract: Recently, a rapid increase in the resistance of pathogenic bacteria to antibiotics and chemotherapeutics admitted for use in aquaculture has been observed. This happens especially often in intensive breeding. The use of drugs in closed circuits is problematic because it can damage biological filters. Therefore, in recent years, there has been a growing interest in natural methods of combating pathogens. These include bacteriophages. The aim of the study was to determine the safety of the new BAFADOR® bacteriop… Show more

“…The same group studied also the effect of BAFADOR ® on the rainbow trout's immune system when a mixed infection of Aeromonas and Pseudomonas was induced. As in the previous case, an immunomodulating effect was achieved and higher survival rates in the treated groups were observed [68].…”

“…It is also worth to mention that no adverse side effects have been observed so far when the phage therapy was applied in aquaculture because lower vertebrates are reported to be resistant to endotoxic shock. Therefore, LPS is rather considered here as an immunostimulant, inducing an immune system to react [36,68].…”

“…Therefore, we must empirically verify this critical parameter. Very recently, a phage cocktail containing seven bacteriophages (three against A. hydrophila and four against P. fluorescens ) has been tested in the European eel ( Anguilla anguilla ) and rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss ), reducing the mortality of fish challenged with strains of these two species of bacteria [ 56 , 197 ]. Cocktails have also been used successfully in laboratory tests or small field trials in food protection or veterinary and human medicine [ 198 , 199 , 200 , 201 ].…”

“…Reports on phage immunomodulatory activity in rainbow trout subjected to phage treatment also came from Schulz et al [106]. The authors used a commercially available phage cocktail called BAFADOR, intended for use in aquaculture niches.…”
