Bacteriological profile of urinary tract infections and antibiotic susceptibility of Escherichia coli in Algeria

Abstract: Background and Objectives: Urinary tract infections are one of the most common bacterial infections worldwide. The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains is a serious problem and greatest challenge in public health care. The pur- pose of this study was to determine the prevalence of uropathogenic microorganisms and the antibiotic resistance pattern of Escherichia coli in Algeria. Materials and Methods: Urine samples were collected from 760 outpatients in the hospital of Tizi-Ouzou (Algeria).… Show more

“…In this study, the prevalence of uropathogens accounted for 68(34.0%) among pregnant women. This observation were in tandem with the earlier studies where a prevalence rate of 37.3%, 38.6%, 35.5%, 38% and 40.0% were reported in India, Lagos, Algeria, Niger Delta and Jos [16,17,18,19] but disagree with earlier report which accounted for 45.7, 53.8, 65.4%, 79.9%, 90.1% and 97.3% [20,21,22,23,24]. The different in prevalence rates reported may be due to factors like number of sample and duration of study, deployment of diverse methodologies, sexual intercourse, studied group influence, low socio-economic status among Nigerian Women.…”

“…This involved low susceptibility to aminopenicillins, third-generation cephalosporins and sulphonamides, medium susceptibility to quinolones and high susceptibility to aminoglycosides, especially amikacin, carbapenems and nitrofurantoin. 24 , 25 However, the proportions observed from our data were consistently lower. Lower susceptibility of the amoxicillin/clavulanic acid combination may have been influenced by batch-to-batch variations and storage conditions.…”

“…Uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) is commonly associated with CAUTIs and comprises ∼80% of urinary tract infections. , WG-1 silicone achieved a log 5 (99.999%) reduction via a 24 h ASTM E2149 shake flask test. Separately, after WG-1 was immersed for 28 d in a pH 6.5 M3 medium, an ASTM E2149 shake flask test for the removed samples confirmed antimicrobial effectiveness against UPEC.…”
