Bacteriological Profile of Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media and Antibiotic Susceptibility in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Shanghai, China

Abstract: Objective: Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is mostly caused by bacterial infection of the middle ear and antibiotics are generally used empirically, which may lead to the emergence of resistant bacterial strains. The objective of the study is to assess the bacteriological profile of and evaluate the antibiotic susceptibility of strains isolated in a tertiary care hospital in Shanghai, China. Methods: This study included 289 individuals with clinical diagnosis of CSOM. Middle ear purulent discharge was … Show more

“…Incidence of otitis media is lower in adults compared to childhood [12], for example is the percentage shown for children under the age of 6 in Nigeria which is 9.2% [13]. Similar to CSMO in Colombia [14] and China [15], the majority of CSOM cases are on people over 20 years old. This result can occur if the patient had a discharge from the ear (otorrhea) since childhood and the symptoms persist into adulthood.…”

“…This situation is common among populations with limited access to otologic health care, particularly in lower-income countries or marginalized groups. Taken together, the differences that we observed across age quartiles are likely to reflect [1] long-standing, untreated or inadequately treated OM, and [2] recent antibiotic use on top of a potentially long history of antibiotic prescription (local or oral) and high likelihood of antibiotic resistance ( Xu et al., 2020 ).…”

“…On the other hand, the most abundant taxa in cholesteatoma tissues were Corynebacterium , Porphyromonas , and Staphylococcus , with 11.5%, 8.3%, and 8.0% mean abundances ( Table S1 , Figure 1 ). Staphylococcus is often isolated from COM samples, but may be resistant to penicillin, macrolides or quinolones ( Xu et al., 2020 ).…”

“…Moreover, in the majority of cases, species of the S. ciferrii complex are not identified. CSOM is prevalent in China just like most other developing countries and usually caused by bacteria ( Xu et al, 2020 ). CSOM caused by S. ciferrii complex is rarely reported.…”

“…Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a chronic inflammation, characterized by repeated otorrhea via tympanic membrane perforation and involving polymicrobial infection of the middle ear and mastoid cavity ( Bhutta et al, 2020 ). Usually, the common pathogens causing CSOM are Staphylococcus aureus , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus ( Xu et al, 2020 ). However, the isolation rate of S. ciferrii complex has increased recently in our hospital.…”
