Bacteriocin small of Rhizobium leguminosarum belongs to the class of N-acyl-L-homoserine lactone molecules, known as autoinducers and as quorum sensing co-transcription factors

Abstract: small bacteriocin was isolated from the culture broth of the gram-negative bacterium Rhizobium leguminosarum, which forms symbiotic nitrogen-fixing root nodules on a number of leguminous plants. The structure of the molecule was elucidated by spectroscopic methods and identified as N-(3R-hydroxy-7-cis-tetradecanoyl)-L-homoserine lactone. The absolute configuration of both asymmetric carbon atoms in the molecule was determined by the use of the chiral solvating agents S-(؉)-and R-(؊)-2,2,2-trifluoro-1-(9-anthry… Show more

“…These characteristics presumably allow the AHLs to traverse the phospholipid bilayer of the cell membrane and to navigate the aqueous intracellular and extracellular environments (60). The acyl chain varies in length, from 4 to 18 carbons in those AHLs identified so far (71,77,108,134,150). Variability also exists in the third carbon position of the acyl chain, where there can be a hydrogen, hydroxyl, or oxo substitution (see Table 1).…”

“…Short-chain AHLs have 4 to 8 carbon atoms in the acyl moiety, while long-chain AHLs have 10 to 18 carbons. The length and saturation level of the acyl chains coupled to the presence or absence of oxo or hydroxyl substitutions at the C-3 position of the acyl chain provide variation and specificity for quorum-sensing communication in a mixed bacterial population (58,85,88,123,125).…”

“…AHL-mediated quorum sensing plays a role in regulating antibiotic biosynthesis (Wood et al, 1997), bioluminescence , plasmid conjugal transfer Piper et al, 1993), swarming , cessation of cell growth (Gray et al, 1996;Schripsema et al, 1996) and capsular polysaccharide synthesis (Beck von Bodman and Farrand, 1995).
