Bacteriocin-Based Synergetic Consortia: a Promising Strategy to Enhance Antimicrobial Activity and Broaden the Spectrum of Inhibition

Abstract: Reuterin and bacteriocins, including microcin J25, pediocin PA-1, nisin were produced and purified with >90% purity. Using the broth-based checkerboard assay the interaction between these compounds (synergetic, additive, or antagonistic) was assessed.

“…These metabolic products can also prevent biofilm formation by altering the hydrophobic characteristics of the bacterial surface and decreasing surface tension and, consequently, its adhesion ability [ 25 ]. Bacteriocins are ribosomally synthesised proteins or peptides with antibacterial activity [ 40 , 41 ]. For example, nisin, derived from Lactococcus lactis , has been approved for its antimicrobial activity against several foodborne microorganisms by the WHO and the FDA and is widely used as a food preservative [ 25 , 31 ].…”

“…This raises the likelihood that the use of multiple narrow-spectrum SPBs targeting different mechanisms could have synergistic and favorable microbial killing profiles and reduce the likelihood of resistance development. Some recent studies suggest this phenomenon (131,132). Alternatively, a combination of bacterial AMPs with HDPs could also show synergistic activities and provide a favorable microbial killing profile, as recently shown by Bitschar et al (99).…”

“…EDTA acts by promoting the release of the LPS layer and synergistically potentiates the antimicrobial activity of bacteriocins, as reviewed by Prudêncio et al [68]. Recent studies report the use of bacteriocins with other compounds, as verifed by Soltani et al [61] that verifed the synergistic efect of using Pediocin PA-1 bacteriocins combined with citric acid and/or lactic acid and which inhibited Gram-negative strains such as Aeromonas hydrophila and Klebsiella pneumoniae. In another study by Wang et al [69] verifed the synergistic efect of pediocin PA-1 with lactic acid which also inhibited the Gram-negativeA.…”
