“…At the 'winter-dry' site, infections were slight, but significant negative correlations between lucerne persistence parameters and bacterial wilt assessments (Table 7) indicate the disease had adverse effects. However, the bacterial-wilt-resistant cultivars 'Washoe' (Hunt et al 1966) and 'Lahontan' (Hanson 1958) did not yield well whereas 'Wairau' which has not been noted for resistance to bacterial wilt (Close & Mulcock 1972) persisted well and gave relatively satisfactory yields of herbage throughout. These apparently anomalous reactions by some lucerne cultivars to low levels of bacterial wilt infection suggest that bacterial wilt was relatively unimportant at the 'winter-dry' site.…”

“…However, identification of bacterial wilt, Corynebacterium michiganensis p.v. insidiosum (McCulloch) Dye & Kemp, in crops of 'Wairau' aroused concern regarding its future use (Close & Mulcock 1972). This prompted the importation of bacterial-wilt-resistant lucerne cultivars and the initiation of field testing programmes to assess the adaptation of the introduced cultivars to the local environment and their resistance to local strains of lucerne pathogens.…”

“…In fields, infected plants are yellow-green in colour, exhibit stunted growth and are scattered throughout stands or grouped in patches (Close and Mulcock, 1972). The initial symptoms are leaf mottling together with a slight cupping or curling upwards of the leaflet margins associated with a reduction in plant height.…”

“…A "witches' broom" syndrome can be observed as a result of stem proliferation. insidiosus (Close and Mulcock, 1972). Bleaching can be limited to the leaf margin or gain the entire leaf.…”
