Bacterial meningitis following introduction of Hib conjugate vaccine in northern Uganda

Abstract: Hib conjugate vaccine delivered through the national immunisation programme is very effective in reducing Hib meningitis in children under 5 years of age. Continued laboratory-based surveillance of bacterial meningitis in Africa is needed to assess the effectiveness of vaccination programmes and detect other vaccine-preventable pathogens.

It is expected that the recent launch of universal pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in the region will similarly result in significant reduction in cases of ABM 18 19.…”

It is the second or third cause in several countries after the introduction of the Hib vaccine 29, 31, 32 , and might even become the leading cause of bacterial meningitis after effective introduction of pneumococcal vaccine.…”
