Bacterial canine vector-borne zoonotic diseases in “One Health” concept

Abstract: Canine vector-borne diseases constitute a large group of diseases transmitted by arthropods with worldwide distribution. A wide range of bacterial, viral, and parasitic agents that are transmitted by vectors cause disease to dogs, many of which can also affect humans and thus have an important zoonotic potential. Bacterial agents that are transmitted by vectors have been considered less important than viral or parasitic agents and are not commonly discussed in companion animal practice. However, close contact … Show more

“…Furthermore, domestic dogs play an important epidemiological role in the transmission of some BVBPs to humans ( Chomel et al, 2006 ; Valiakos, 2016 ; Bowser and Anderson, 2018 ; Nguyen et al, 2021 ). For example, dogs are a natural mammalian reservoir host for zoonotic BVBPs such as Rickettsia felis ( Ng-Nguyen et al, 2020 ), the causative agent of flea-borne spotted fever, transmitted by Ctenocephalides felis and Rickettsia conorii , or Mediterranean spotted fever, transmitted by Rhipicephalus sanguineus ( s.l. )…”
