Bacterial and Phytoplankton Production in Two Coastal Systems Influenced by Distinct Eutrophication Processes

Abstract: Evaluating the relationships between bacterial (BP) and phytoplankton production (PP) is a fi rst step to understand carbon fl uxes through pelagic food webs. In the present study, BP and PP were compared at two tropical coastal systems infl uenced by distinct eutrophication processes in order to assess the main regulating factors of particulate organic carbon (POC) production rates. The waters of Cabo Frio region (23 o 00'S; 42 o 00'W) present high nitrate (N-NO 3 ) levels and low temperatures resulting from … Show more

“…This leads to serious environmental and human health problems: the rate of water-transmitted diseases is quite high (although sanitation has improved in Brazil, still circa 65% of hospitalizations are due to water-transmitted diseases) ( Brasil, 2005 ). Microbes entering the bay also end up affecting other aquatic species and the ecosystem ( Paranhos et al, 1995 , 2001 ; Valentin et al, 1999 ; Guenther and Valentin, 2008 ; Gregoracci et al, 2012 ; Coutinho et al, 2014 ).…”

“…The presence of pathogenic microorganisms in Guanabara Bay is undeniable. Among these microorganisms, the abundance, diversity and dominance of bacteria has been more thoroughly studied ( Paranhos et al, 1998 , 2001 , Guenther and Valentin, 2008 ; Gregoracci et al, 2012 ; Coutinho et al, 2014 ). On the other hand, the lack of information about virus clearly indicates the necessity of more complete and systematic studies.…”

“…It is likely that reproduction and coastal recruitment of Chilomycterus s. spinosus is facilitated by the increased primary production of the system (Guenther & Valentin 2008), marked by increased continental drainage which reaches the neritic zone during the austral summer, as proposed by BarlettaBergan et al (2002) for the tropical Caeté estuary (01°S). The burrfish use the estuary as a nursery until they reach the size at first maturity.…”

“…The high phytoplankton production in the bay (Guenther & Valentin 2008) may lead to larger populations of species throughout the trophic spectrum. Nevertheless, the availability of resources can become limiting to population growth because it depends on the population sizes of the species that compose the diet of the burrfish.…”

“…The high and continuous input of allochthonous nutrients and organic material from the surrounding lands and the domestic sewage leads to high phytoplankton and bacterial growth (BARRERA-ALBA et al, 2008;GAULKE et al, 2010;VALENTIN, 2008b;MORTAZAVI et al;SCHUMANN et al, 2003;YUAN et al, 2010). However, most of estuarine BGE in situ estimates were performed in temperate zones, with few exceptions on the tropics (GUENTHER et al, 2008a;LEE et al, 2009;RAM et al, 2003;RAM et al, 2007).…”
