Bacteria-driven hypoxia targeting delivery of chemotherapeutic drug proving outcome of breast cancer

Abstract: Local hypoxia is a common feature of many solid tumors and may lead to unsatisfactory chemotherapy outcomes. Anaerobic bacteria that have an affinity to hypoxic areas can be used to achieve targeted drug delivery in tumor tissues. In this study, we developed a biocompatible bacteria/nanoparticles biohybrid (Bif@DOX-NPs) platform that employs the anaerobic Bifidobacterium infantis (Bif) to deliver adriamycin-loaded bovine serum albumin nanoparticles (DOX-NPs) into breast tumors. The Bif@DOX-NPs retained the tar… Show more

“… 40–42 Intravenously administered Bif or its hybrid did not result in any significant toxicity in the heart, liver, spleen, lung, kidney and blood of mice. 27 , 28 Bif-mediated delivery of doxorubicin NPs to the hypoxic area of breast tumors improved the therapeutic outcome. 27 Therefore, Bif-based biohybrids are a safe and efficient drug delivery system for cancer treatment.…”

“…The result showed that DOX-PFP-PLGA were successfully connected to the surface of EcM. According to the reported method (Xiao et al, 2022), we next validated the effect of DOX-PFP-PLGA coating on bacterial activity. By counting the bacterial colonization in each plate, it was found that no statistical difference in the activity of bacteria attaches or non-attach nanodroplets (Figure 3D).…”
