Bacteremia in cirrhosis of the liver

Abstract: ABSTRACT— In a retrospective study the average yearly incidence of bacteremia in cirrhosis patients was found to be 4.5%. This is about 5–7 times higher than in two general materials of all bacteremic patients from the same hospital. There was no difference between the distribution of bacterial strains in the 43 bacteremic cirrhosis patients and the two general materials of all bacteremic patients.

“…However, we found that Gram-negative bacteria were predominant among bacterial strains involved in bacteremia, and this is consistent with the fact that BT is known to be strongly correlated with the presence of aerobic Gram-negative bacteria. In agreement with previous reports (8,9,12), we found that the pathogenic bacteria most frequently detected in bacteremia were E. coli, followed by Klebsiella sp. These bacteria were also detected most frequently in the ascitic culture of SBP patients.…”

“…In addition, the reported percentage of nosocomial infections in liver cirrhosis patients varies widely (24%-63%) (8,9). In our study, the percentage was high, at 70.2%.…”

“…The study would have been improved by inclusion of more clinical details, in particular information about the degree of liver cirrhosis. Some studies have reported an especially poor prognosis among patients with severe cirrhosis (Barnes et al, 1988;Graudal et al, 1986;Kuo et al, 1991;Rosa et al, 2000).…”

“…Acute and chronic liver diseases are known to be associated with an increased risk of bacteremia (29-31) and have been shown to be independent risk factors for the development of bacteremia in patients with community-acquired pneumonia (32). This feature has been correlated with impaired function of the hepatic reticuloendothelial system (33), and complement (34) and polymorphonuclear cells.…”
