Backreaction in Axion Monodromy, 4-forms and the Swampland

Abstract: Axion monodromy models can always be described in terms of an axion coupled to 3-form gauge fields with non-canonical kinetic terms. The presence of the saxions parametrising the kinetic metrics of the 3-form fields leads to backreaction effects in the inflationary dynamics. We review the case in which saxions backreact on the Kähler metric of the inflaton leading to a logarithmic scaling of the proper field distance at large field. This behaviour is universal in Type II string flux compactifications and consi… Show more

“…where both terms S · J 2 0 and S · J 2 0 are non-negative. Since we have shown above that S · J 2 0 > 0, we concludeK · C 0 > 0 , (D. 39) contradicting that C 0 belongs to the first part of (D. 35). When S supports a U (1) gauge group in the sense that it is the height-pairing divisor of a section, it has already been conjectured in [13] that there exists an integer n > 0 such that S < nK.…”

“…Motivated by the earlier field theory proposals by [11,12,13], it was explicitly shown in [40] (see also the review [41]) that the resulting scalar potential takes a very peculiar form, namely it can be expressed in terms of 4D space-time filling four-forms coupled to the axions…”
