Relay feedback systems belong, since long, to the rather classical topics of control theory and engineering. While they were first used as robust and simple switching elements in automatic control systems, over time, they have experienced different periods of renewed interest with regards to both theoretical analysis and applications. Examples include the automatic tuning of simple feedback controllers, delta-sigma modulators for analog-digital converters, robust relay-based controls, nonlinear systems analysis and identification, among others. One of the remarkable features of using relays in feedback is the appearance of stable limit cycles. The structural and parametric conditions for the stable limit cycles, their prediction, and controllability of magnitude and frequency have already been solved, to a large part, in previous researches, driven by both theoretical curiosity and application requirements. This brief tutorial paper summarizes the basic principles of relay feedback systems, discusses several characteristics that are interesting from an application perspective, and addresses some issues related to its further use for system identification. A casespecific study for estimating the unknown backlash, hidden within two-mass systems, is demonstrated along with an experimental example, based on provoking the controllable drifting limit cycles by the non-ideal relay in the velocity feedback loop.

Optimal operations of industrial control systems require rigorous monitoring to ensure safety, increase profitability, and minimize plant maintenance downtime. Thus, controller performance monitoring has been actively pursued by the research community, resulting in increased research publications over the past two decades. The availability of large data sets, the so-called big data era, has led impetus to the data-driven domain of controller performance monitoring. In this paper, a comprehensive review of the data-driven research in the CPM domain is presented. To illustrate the rationale behind the research efforts, a succinct explanation of the faults observed in control loops and their influence on overall controller performance is also presented. The paper then provides the publicly available data repositories adopted by most researchers to assess and compare their performance monitoring techniques realistically. Moreover, a review of the most eminent techniques proposed so far concerning both detection and diagnosis phases is presented.

Dynamics of a driven harmonic oscillator coupled to independent Ising spins in random fields

In general we are interested in dynamical systems coupled to complex hysteresis. Therefore as a first step we did some investigation on the dynamics of a periodically driven damped harmonic oscillator coupled to independent Ising spins with a local quenched disorder at zero temperature in the past. Although such a system does not produce hysteresis, we showed how to characterize the dynamics of such a piecewise-smooth system, specially in case of a large number of spins [P. Zech, A. Otto, and G. Radons, Phys. Rev. E101,042217 (2020)]. In this paper we want to extend our model to spins dimers, thus spins with pairwise interaction. We will show in which cases two interacting spins can show elementary hysteresis and we will give a connection to the Preisach Model (PM), when superpose a infinite number of spin-pairs in the thermodynamic limit. We will see, that this will lead us to a dynamical system with an additional hysteretic force in form of a play operator. By using methods from general chaos theory, piecewise-smooth system theory and statistics we will investigate the chaotic behavior of the dynamical system for a few spins and also in case of larger number of spins by calculating bifurcation diagrams, fractal dimensions and self-averaging properties. In doing so we show, how the dynamical properties of the piecewise-smooth system for a large number of spins differs from the system in its thermodynamic limit.
