Background parenchymal uptake on molecular breast imaging as a breast cancer risk factor: a case-control study

Abstract: BackgroundMolecular breast imaging (MBI) is a functional test used for supplemental screening of women with mammographically dense breasts. Additionally, MBI depicts variable levels of background parenchymal uptake (BPU) within nonmalignant, dense fibroglandular tissue. We investigated whether BPU is a risk factor for breast cancer.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective case-control study of 3027 eligible women who had undergone MBI between February 2004 and February 2014. Sixty-two incident breast cancer cases w… Show more

“…Also similar to MD, moderate or marked BPE, in the absence of malignancy, has been associated in several studies with an increase in BC risk ( [4,31,55], detailed in Table 4). The target populations in these studies varied, however a major theme was a MRI scan of normal breast tissue, with approximately 1-year follow-up.…”

“…Because the initial guesses and phantoms are fairly similar, the first few iterations yield the lowest error. Background parenchymal uptake of sestamibi yields non-uniform structure in breast projections [49], which may require additional OSEM iterations to resolve. A consequence of more OSEM iterations would be further reductions in SNR, but with a potential increase in contrast as observe in generated parametric curves 4 and 11.…”

“…This retrospective analysis was compliant with the US Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and approved by the Mayo Clinic Institutional Review Board, which issued a waiver of informed consent. A case-control study previously established to evaluate the association of subjective BPU categories with breast cancer risk was used in the current analysis [ 10 ]. As previously described, we established this case-control group within a cohort of patients who underwent MBI between 1 February 2005 and 28 February 2014 ( n = 3202) and who were followed for breast cancer diagnoses through 31 December 2014.…”

“…MBI examinations were performed as previously described [ 10 ]. Briefly, MBI was performed using a dedicated dual-head gamma camera system equipped with semiconductor-based detectors (cadmium zinc telluride).…”
