Background and rationale to a practical workshop on biological effects of pollutants

Abstract: The Practical Workshop on Biological Effects of Pollutants (GEEP Workshop) was held in August 1986 at the University of Oslo, Norway, under the auspices of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission's Group of Experts on the Effects of Pollutants (GEEP). The workshop was attended by 35 participants from 11 countries. This MEPS SPECIAL contains the major results and conclusions, and thls first paper introduces and explains the background and rationale to the workshop.

“…A third simulation was then run to make a direct comparison with experimental data published in Schwinghamer (1988). These data derive from the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission's Group of Experts on the Effects of Pollutants Practical Workshop on Biological Effects of Pollutants, as detailed in Marine Ecology Progress Series special volume 46 (Bayne et al 1988). Specifically, they are the combined data from a series of mesocosm experiments (see Fig.…”

“…Whether identification to species level or to a higher taxonomic level would suffice to detect faunal response to changes in the environment, particularly disturbance arising from pollution, has been the subject of considerable debate (e.g. Bayne et al 1988, Warwick 1988a,b, Ferraro & Cole 1990, Gray et al 1990). The traditional view has been that identification of fauna to a higher taxonomic level would not result in sufficient discrimination because differences in species-level responses may be masked between sites.…”

“…The rationale for including a mesocosm experiment in the GEEP Workshop is discussed in Bayne et al (1988). The main intention was to ensure the availability of material which had been exposed to defined contaminant concentrations for at least 3 mo.…”
