BackFi

Abstract: We present BackFi, a novel communication system that enables high throughput, long range communication between very low power backscatter devices and WiFi APs using ambient WiFi transmissions as the excitation signal. Specifically, we show that it is possible to design devices and WiFi APs such that the WiFi AP in the process of transmitting data to normal WiFi clients can decode backscatter signals which the devices generate by modulating information on to the ambient WiFi transmission. We show via prototypes… Show more

“…This is called backscatter communication technology [108]. There are various carrier wave sources that have been tested in the literature including TV transmission stations and WiFi access points [109,110,111,112]. The potential of using this backscatter phenomena to eavesdrop on internal CPU operations of IoT devices by listening to ambient RF sources warrants further exploration.…”

“…Ambient backscatter leverages ambient RF signals such as TV transmissions [16] or WiFi traffic [10,14] [10]. Our present work is complementary to these efforts; however, passive sensor tags could also leverage ambient RF signals.…”

“…As there are limited research works conducted under energy efficient communications based on NOMA with backscatter, it is a feasible direction for future green wireless networking. One of the main challenges of backscatter communication, the reduced strength of the backscatter signal, can be overcome by full duplex communications as suggested in [124]. Moreover, research works reveal that frequency modulated (FM) signals also can be used for radio frequency energy harvesting [125].…”
