Bacillus halochares sp. nov., a halophilic bacterium isolated from a solar saltern

Abstract: A novel halophilic bacterium, designated strain MSS4T, was isolated from the solar salterns of Mesolongi, Greece. The micro-organism, a motile, Gram-stain-positive, aerobic rod, proliferated at salinities of 1.0–4.0 M NaCl, with optimal growth at 2.5 M NaCl. Endospores were not observed. Strain MSS4T showed optimal growth at 37 °C and pH 8.0. The G+C content of its DNA was 47.2 mol%. The polar lipid pattern of strain MSS4T consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidic acid and phospha… Show more

“…They are sporogenic and produce endospores, which are resistant to different physical and chemical agents. They are common inhabitants of terrestrial and fresh water habitats and excel in extreme conditions including hypersaline water, hydrothermal vents and salt pans (Rüger & Richter, 1979;Arahal et al, 1999;Caccamo et al, 2000;Pappa et al, 2010;Zhang et al, 2010). They also occur in the stratosphere (Shivaji et al, 2006).…”

“…Finally, in the last pond (called crystallizer), common salt is precipitated [4]. Many studies have focused on the isolation of bacteria harbored in hypersaline environments, identifying the following major groups: Bacteroidetes [12], Firmicutes [13][14][15], ϒ-Proteobacteria [13,[16][17], and ϒ-Proteobacteria being the most abundant.…”

“…Mei et al [64] describe the physiology of a Natrinema sp. strain J7-2, an extremely halophilic archaea isolated from a salt mine in China, under salt stress conditions (15,25,and 30% NaCl). This strain showed the highest growth rate at 25-30% of NaCl, while at 15% cells were more fragile.…”

“…Bacillus species have been isolated from various habitats, including air (Shivaji et al 2006), ancient tombs (Gatson et al 2006), brown alga (Ivanova et al 2004), desert sands , forest soils (Chen et al 2011), freshwater (Baik et al 2010), ginseng root (Qiu et al 2009), hot springs (Nazina et al 2004), marine sediments (You et al 2013;Zhu et al 2014), sea water (Yoon et al 2003), sandy soil (Lee et al 2008) and a soda lake (Reddy et al 2015). Many can be found in saline habitats (Amoozegar et al 2009;Arahal et al 1999;Lee et al 2006;Lim et al 2006;Pappa et al 2010;Shi et al 2011;Xue et al 2008).…”
