Bacillary angiomatosis in an HIV seronegative patient on systemic steroid therapy

Abstract: Bacillary angiomatosis is an unusual systemic vascular proliferation seen predominantly in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. These vascular lesions are due to infection with a Bartonella species, most commonly B. henselae, but sometimes B. quintana. It is treatable and often curable, but without therapy may be life-threatening. Clinically, the disorder often resembles several different vascular disorders, particularly pyogenic granuloma and Kaposi's sarcoma. We now report a clinically typic… Show more

“…Bacillary angiomatosis may resemble KS both clinically and histologically [80,81]. Histologically, the Grocott-methenamine silver stain and the Warthin-Starry stain at pH 3.2 show the bacterial etiologic agent to good advantage, although these bacteria may also be evident employing the hematoxylin-eosin, periodic acid-Schiff, and alcian blue stains.…”

“…223 BA may resemble KS both clinically and histologically (Fig 14). [232][233][234] Cutaneously, typical BA is a violaceous angiomatous tumor or a nodule resembling a pyogenic granuloma. Subcutaneous nodules, with or without ulceration, are sometimes seen.…”

“…[2][3][4][5] The disease is common in immunocompromised patients, mainly patients with HIV infection. 2,6 Histologic study shows circumscribed lobular proliferations of the small blood vessels. 4 The etiologic agent of bacillary angiomatosis is Bartonella henselae or B quintana.…”
