Baboon Bone Marrow Transplantation in Humans: Application of Cross‐Species Disease Resistance

Abstract: Xenotransplantation is a newly evolving field. A renewed interest has emerged coincidentally with the shortage of donor organs for transplantation. Bone marrow (BM) chimerism has been suggested as a potential strategy to induce tolerance to xenografts and control the immune response across a species barrier. Bone marrow transplantation (BMTx) displays unique features compared to solid-organ transplantation or transplantation of other cellular grafts. To achieve engraftment of the pluripotent hematopoietic stem… Show more

“…For example, following pig‐to‐baboon organ Tx, porcine cytomegalovirus has not been documented to infect the host baboon, and baboon cytomegalovirus has not been seen to infect the transplanted pig organ 102, 103. Baboon livers were transplanted into 2 patients in Pittsburgh as a means of avoiding hepatitis B recurrence,21 and baboon bone marrow Tx has been explored as a means of avoiding reinfection of human immune system cells by human immunodeficiency virus 104, 105…”

With the exception of reviews by Hammer and Platt and their respective colleagues, 84,[106][107][108] most aspects of physiologic compatibility between pigs and humans have been sparsely investigated or not investigated at all.…”
