B1‐ and CD5‐Positive B Cells

Abstract: B1 (B1a/B1b) cells represent a population distinct from conventional B2 cells, which predominates the coelomic cavities. In contrast to B2 cells, B1 cells are selected by self‐antigens, and are chronically active in an autonomous B cell receptor pathway. B1 cells produce circulating IgM natural antibodies that provide ‘innate‐like’ protection against pathogens, contribute to the elimination of apoptotic cells and prevent B1 cell expansion. Furthermore, B1 cells are effective both in presenting autoantigens to … Show more

“…In human B cells, HERV-E insertion introduces another promoter for the cd5 gene, and enables transcription of a fusion transcript that splices in CD5 exon 2 with the consequence of an ORF shift to exon 3, leading to an intracellular variant of CD5 [ 26 ]. The LTR2-CD5 fusion transcripts are found in lymphoid organs, and such expression is confined to B cells with the higher expression observed in the B1 cell subset [ 27 , 28 ]. We have not detected proviral HERV-E.CD5 transcripts containing gag and/or env genes.…”

“…Mammals can produce NAbs without antigenic stimulation and NAbs sometimes serve other functions such as removal of aged cells or antibodies (Baumgarth, Tung, & Herzenberg, 2005). NAbs are produced by a class of B cells termed B-1 cells and are credited with protecting organisms of a variety of taxa from pathogens, which the organism was not previously exposed to (Renaudineau, Bariller, & Olivier Pers, 2014). Determining whether or not the characteristics of NAbs in reptiles are similar to mammals will help to understand how reptiles produce an efficient immune response while lacking a robust adaptive response.…”

“…This integration occurred just prior to the divergence of hominoids from old world monkeys 25 million years ago [14]. In SLE B cells, defective DNA methylation at HERV-CD5 promoter introduces an alternative promoter for the cd5 gene, and enables transcription of a fusion transcript with the consequence of an intracellular variant of CD5 [15,16], which could, in turn, promote B cell autoreactivity [17,18].…”
