Im Jahre 1934 hat Mussolini der Kgl. Italienischen Akademie den Auftrag gegeben, ein neues, der Zeit entsprechendes Wörterbuch der italienischen Sprache zu schaffen. In der unglaublich kurzen Zeit von fünf Jahren haben die von der Akademie dazu gewonnenen Kräfte unter der Leitung von Giulio Bertoni das Werk soweit gefördert, dais mit der Drucklegung begonnen werden konnte. Heute liegt der erste Band bereits vor, in schönem, übersichtlichem Druck, auf bestem Papier. Schon rein äufserlich präsentiert sich das Buch als eine Glanzleistung, und der Inhalt ist der äuiseren Form angemessen. Im Vorwort erzählt Luigi Federzoni mit lapidarischer Knappheit die Entstehung des Werkes, indem er neben Bertoni auch die Mitwirkung von Carlo Formichi und Clemente Merlo (letzterer besonders für die Etymologien) würdigt. Die Einleitung, von Formichi und Bertoni gezeichnet, gibt eine kurzgefaiste Übersicht über die Geschichte der italienischen Lexikographie, von den Vokabularien des 16. Jahrhunderts an. Besonders wird die Entwicklung des Wörterbuchs der Crusca, deren erste Auflage 1612 erschien, beleuchtet. Auch die Wechsel volle Geschichte des Tommaseo-Bellini wird erzählt. Das Ziel dieses Wörterbuchs ist nicht identisch mit demjenigen des Wörterbuchs, das die Acadomie Fransaise seit mehr als zwei Jahrhunderten immer wieder herausgibt. Die französische Akademie will die Norm für eine korrekte und angemessene Verwendung des französischen Wortschatzes geben. Die gleiche Absicht verfolgt auch die italienische Akademie. Jahrhunderts bis zu Leopardi, Manzoni, Carducci ist der Sprachgebrauch der groisen Schriftsteller mit berücksichtigt. Während also z. B. franz. mattresse in der bei Moliere geläufigen Bedeutung, femme que aime en tout honneur" im Dict. de rAcademie von 1935 nicht erscheint, gibt das ital. Wörterbuch zu Hunderten Vokabeln wie chiavare ,,inchiodare", die...
