prefmod: AnRPackage for Modeling Preferences Based on Paired Comparisons, Rankings, or Ratings

Abstract: The first part of this paper describes a series of loglinear preference models based on paired comparisons, a method of measurement whose aim is to order a set of objects according to an attribute of interest by asking subjects to compare pairs of objects. Based on the basic Bradley-Terry specification, two types of models, the loglinear Bradley-Terry model and a pattern approach are presented. Both methods are extended to include subject and object-specific covariates and some further structural effects. In a… Show more

“…To investigate Hypothesis 1, we used loglinear BradleyTerry (LLBT) modeling [12] of the 6060 pairwise aesthetic preference comparisons to produce ranked "worth" scores for each of the four schematization styles. The worth score allows the consistency of preference to be assessed in forming an overall ranking of the four classes.…”

“…The model estimation for ordinal BTL models were computed with the ordBTL package (Casalicchio, 2013), which is implemented in the statistical software R (R Core Team, 2013) and is able to fit models with any number of response categories. Other packages for model estimation, which can handle responses up to 3 categories but have no built-in variable selection procedure, are prefmod (Hatzinger & Dittrich, 2012) and BradleyTerry2 (Turner & Firth, 2012).…”

“…Most of the available add-on packages for paired comparison models in R are restricted to the case of binary response and cannot deal with ordered response. The most popular packages are prefmod (Hatzinger and Dittrich, 2012) and BradleyTerry2 (Turner and Firth, 2012). The former uses the log linear representation of BT-models and can handle draws in the response variable.…”
