B phenomenology

Abstract: Many topics are discussed in b physics including lifetimes, decay mechanisms, determinations of the CKM matrix elements |V cb | and |V ub |, facilities for b quark studies, neutral B meson mixing, rare b decays, hadronic decays and CP violation. I review techniques for finding physics beyond the Standard Model and describe the complimentarity of b decay measurements in elucidating new physics that could be found at higher energy machines.

“…Experimental data on B → X s γ Among inclusive rare B decays, the B → X s γ mode is the most prominent because it was already measured by several independent e + e − -experiments, mostly at the Υ(4S) resonance, fig. 4 [37,[39][40][41][42] (see also [43][44][45]). In 1993, the first evidence for a penguin-induced B meson decay was found by the CLEO collaboration.…”

“…Precise lattice calculations of matrix elements for B decay are essential to the experimental B factory programme (Stone, 2002). This aims to test the internal consistency of the Standard Model in which CP violation occurs through the Cabibbi-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix.…”

“…A more important quantity from the point of view of the B factory programme is the mixing amplitude for neutral B mesons, B 0 and B s . This mixing gives rise to a difference in mass between the CP-eigenstates, ∆m, which can be measured experimentally through oscillations between particle and anti-particle (Stone, 2002). The mixing amplitude is given by the 'box diagram' (see Figure 23) in which the b quark and light anti-quark convert to a b anti-quark and light quark through the mediation of virtual W s and (preferentially) t quarks.…”
