Multidetector CT Angiography of Arterial Inflow and Runoff in the Lower Extremities:A Challenge in Data Acquisition and Evaluation

Abstract: High-resolution CTA lower extremity datasets were acquired successfully, presenting vascular signal intensities of high homogeneity suitable for automated vessel-tracking techniques. Automated 3D visualization tools produced reliable, reproducible, and time-efficient centerline extractions that were comparable to manually defined centerlines.

“…In particular, the ongoing development of MDCTA technology has transformed CT into a 3D imaging technique with outstanding temporal and spatial resolution and the capacity for visualization of even millimeter-sized vessels such as the Adamkiewicz artery. 5,6 By using MDCT, it is possible to employ different postprocessing techniques in addition to source axial images. MIP, MPR, CPR, and VR 7,8 are currently the most frequently used.…”

“…23,24 Boll et al noted that a high-resolution CTA lower extremity data set was acquired with injection of 130 ml of 300 mg I/ml at 3.5 ml/ s and a delay time of 35 s by means of a 16-channel MDCT scanner. 10 The parameters they used were similar to those in our study.…”

“…MDCT with more than 16 channels is now available, offering shorter acquisition times and larger imaging fields. 10 Data concerning the optimal volume and concentration of iodinated contrast material for four-channel MDCT will be useful for MDCT with 16 or more channels.…”
