MIXREGLS: A Program for Mixed-Effects Location Scale Analysis

Abstract: MIXREGLS is a program which provides estimates for a mixed-effects location scale model assuming a (conditionally) normally-distributed dependent variable. This model can be used for analysis of data in which subjects may be measured at many observations and interest is in modeling the mean and variance structure. In terms of the variance structure, covariates can by specified to have effects on both the between-subject and within-subject variances. Another use is for clustered data in which subjects are neste… Show more

“…Sensitivity analyses employing more advanced software options to estimate a heteroskedastic variance model with random effects for variances (Hedeker and Nordgren 2013) yielded results consistent with our conclusions. However, we were unable to include all covariates in these models due to convergence problems encountered with the software.…”

“…All models were fitted using the MIXREGLS program, 11 calling it from within Stata (version 13, StataCorp LP, College Station, TX 77845) using the runmixregls command. 16 A complete technical description of the mixed-effects location scale model and its adaption to the current orthodontic pain study, as well as the details of model fit/run-in is described in the onlinesupplementary-material.…”

“…For each model, the MIXREGLS program (Hedeker and Nordgren, 2013) was used to estimate effects of covariates on mean and WS variance levels of positive or negative mood. We specifically ran four models – two testing the unique and interactive effects of alcohol use, coping-anxiety, and current anxiety symptoms (for positive and negative affect separately) and two testing the unique and interactive effects of alcohol use, coping-depression and current depressive symptoms (for positive and negative affect separately).…”
