Immunomodulatory Effects of Cyperus rotundus Extract on 7,12 Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) Exposed BALB/c Mice

Abstract: Background: The carcinogenic substance 7,12-Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) was commonly used to induce tumor formation in rodents. The development of tumor may trigger higher expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which in turn supports tumor progression. In this study, we examined the efficacy of Cyperus rotundus extract (CRE) that was reported to have anti-inflammatory properties. We focused on investigating the levels of activated T lymphocytes and the pro-inflammatory cytokines expressed by macrophage… Show more

“…Molecule’s present in CR has been reported to inhibit the pro-inflammation via the inhibition of the NF-κB and STAT3 pathways and ROS. (20)(21). As in the condition of SL, some of the studies have shown the expression of the pro-inflammatory gene which are been upregulated in animal models and patients with lymphedema.…”

“… Gyamfi et al, 2018 and Sheng et al, 2018 reported that the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6 has been directly linked to breast cancer progression and risk. DMBA toxicity is known to trigger the release of inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, and IL-6 in breast cancer ( Ramadhani et al, 2020 ). EPNE significantly downregulated the level of inflammatory markers such as TNF-α, and IL-6 as compared to groups of the combination of ER + PTX, ER, and PTX alone in DMBA induced breast cancer group.…”

“…The most reliable and commonly used animal model of carcinogenesis to evaluate the therapeutic potential of a cancer drug candidate is the chemically injected animal model. 7,12-Dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) is one of the most frequently used carcinogenic chemicals to model cancer in animals [19]. Furthermore, DMBA injection on mice causes immunosuppressants, such as reduced macrophage profile 1 (M1) cytokine levels [1].…”
