Dynamic Processes of CO2Storage in the Field: 1. Multiscale and Multipath Channeling of CO2Flow in the Hierarchical Fluvial Reservoir at Cranfield, Mississippi

Abstract: A consistent picture of dynamic channeling, invasion, spreading, and breakthrough (CISB) of supercritical CO2 in the hierarchical fluvial reservoir at Cranfield, Mississippi is presented after 10 years of integration and analysis of complementary field monitoring and characterization data. The dynamic CISB with small‐scale CO2‐flow channels in the F1‐F2‐F3 cross section (F1, F2, and F3 are one injection and two monitoring wells) was imaged by daily electrical resistance tomography (ERT) and time‐lapse crosswel… Show more

“…Similar field observations were recently reported at the sites of cold, liquid or supercritical, CO 2 injection for geological carbon storage (Rangriz Shokri et al., 2019; Zhou et al., 2020). The maximum temperature reduction varied from 30°C at Ordos, China to 60°C at Cranfield, Mississippi, USA.…”

“…At Cranfield, three subsequent tracer tests were conducted using SF 6 and Kr (Lu et al, 2012; Zhou et al, 2020). The first tracer was injected 2 days after the initiation of CO 2 injection, and the subsequent tracer tests were conducted after 4 and 5 months later.…”

“…At the Cranfield CO 2 storage site in Mississippi, various geophysical monitoring methods have been employed (e.g., Zhou et al, 2020). Doetsch et al (2013) link time-lapse crosshole ERT measurements in an uncoupled process-based inversion, together with gas composition data, .…”
