Dynamic Anatomy of the Popliteal Artery:Might Culture Affect the Outcome of Endovascular Therapy?

Abstract: J ENDOVASC THER 2005;12:620-625 LETTERS TO THE EDITORS 623 chemia, and there was no neurological deficit. On the second day, the right hand was warm. MDCT 1 month later showed partial thrombosis in the false lumen and good perfusion of the bypass and the LVA. The central portion of the ARSA was occluded as expected, and the right axillary artery was perfused via collaterals (Figure, D). In this case, MDCT showed the anomalies well, guided us to cerebral angiography, and validated the necessity of a carotid-left… Show more

“…The degree to which culture affects the outcome of an endovascular procedure in the popliteal Dynamic Classification of the Popliteal Artery artery is unknown but still should be under consideration at the time to indicate and endovascular procedure. 7) Generally, deep squatting posture, a position in which soles of the feet lie flat on the floor and the knees bend more than 100 degrees, 7) is uncommon among European and Europe-derived cultures but more prevalent in Asian cultures. 8) Those that are not culturally accustomed have difficulty maintaining such position, commonly dubbed as the Asian squat.…”

“…Arterial flexions and daily activities are not usually considered to affect long-term results of popliteal artery stenting. 2,3 Knowing the dynamic anatomy of each patient's popliteal artery at baseline might exclude some patients from endovascular procedures, while in others, it might help determine the most appropriate stent or arterial segment 2,3 for stent implant. Unfortunately, the clinical implications of this concept remain unclear.…”

“…Giving recommendations, such as limiting knee flexion to 90°, could impair the quality of life of any patient undergoing popliteal artery stenting, regardless of cultural background (Table ). 3 In conclusion, stent characteristics, nature of individual popliteal artery flexions (as obtained from dynamic angiography), and A, Dynamic angiography shows the relationship between the medial supracondylar tubercle (arrow 1) and the hinge point of the popliteal artery (arrow 2) during knee flexion. B, Relationship between the medial supracondylar tubercle (arrow 1) and the upper margin of the patella in the horizontal plane with the leg in extension.…”
