B/C/N Materials Based on the Graphite Network

Abstract: New semiconductors and host materials are expected to be found among newly synthesized boron/carbon/nitrogen (B/C/N) materials based on the graphite network. The synthesis, structure, and properties of such materials, including solid solutions, more‐ordered B/C/N hybrids, and compounds (e.g., BC3, C5N, BC2N, BC3N, BC4N, BC6N2H3), are reviewed. Particular attention is paid to their electrical properties, luminescenc characteristics, and intercalation chemistry, together with the application of B/C/N materials a… Show more

“…10,11 Based on the research previously made by the present authors, Na was efficiently intercalated into B/C/N material which was prepared at 1770 K. According to this information, B/C/N materials prepared at 1770 K having two different compositions were used in this study. The B/C/N thick film was prepared at 1770 K using boron trichloride ( /min) as the starting materials under atmospheric pressure.…”

“…7,8 The B/C/N materials with a graphite-like layered structure are types of hetero-atom substituted carbon alloys, 9 and have been prepared using a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method or other methods. 10,11 The materials are expected to be new host materials for secondary batteries and new semi-conductors. 10,[12][13][14][15] As is described above, Na + ion can be electrochemically intercalated and de-intercalated into and out of a material with a composition BC 2 N, 7,8 while Na cannot be easily intercalated into graphite.…”

“…Since one BN molecule is isoelectronic with two carbon atoms and h-BN has the same layered structure as graphite carbon, it is expected that the atomic level hybridization of h-BN and graphite produces a new semiconducting compound BNCx with a tunable band gap energy depending on its composition (x) and the atomic configuration in the layer [11][12][13]. To date, BNCx compounds, in particular onedimensional nanostructures, with x from 0 to 7 have been prepared by various methods and their photoluminescence (PL) properties have been investigated [14][15][16][17][18][19].…”

“…There has been some success in preparing B x C y N z compositions. [1][2][3] The subject has become of great interest recently because of the relevance of such materials to graphene, which is a two-dimensional network of sp 2 -hybridised carbon atoms. 4,5 Some investigations on compositions formed between boron and carbon as well as carbon and nitrogen are only recently have received attention.…”
