Accessory Renal Arteries Are Not Related to Hypertension Risk: A Review of MR Angiography Data

Abstract: We found no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of renal artery stenosis between patients with accessory renal arteries and those without accessory renal arteries. Assuming that the presence of two separate causes of hypertension in the same patient would be unlikely, this finding implies that accessory renal arteries are a vascular anomaly and not a direct cause of hypertension. The findings are potentially relevant in refuting the theory of accessory renal arteries as an anatomically treat… Show more

“…This finding confirms results of earlier studies with lower number of investigated patients. 9,10 Accessory renal arteries based on autopsy studies are seen in 20-30% of normal patients. 11,12 In this study similar prevalence of the accessory renal arteries to such autopsy data was found only in the young patients.…”

“…Está documentada na literatura, a normalização da pressão arterial após ressecção das artérias renais acessórias. Outros autores 10 afirmam que as artérias renais acessó-rias não aumentam o risco de HTA, referindo que a prevalência de estenose da artéria renal nos doentes com e sem artérias renais acessórias, não é estatisticamente significativa.…”
