Azomesogens with a heterocyclic moiety

Abstract: Azobenzene derivatives were among the first ten liquid crystalline compounds. But there have been no detailed investigations on azomesogens consisting of a heterocyclic moiety. Twelve different azo compounds have been condensed with nicotinic acid to evaluate the effect of variation of terminal group on the monosubstituted pyridine system. The relative thermal stabilities and the variation in the mesomorphic characteristics have also been studied.

“…The increased dipole moment enhances the stability of the lattice and melting temperatures [7]. As the ionic radius of the terminal substituent increases, the molecules tend to orientate in a parallel arrangement [22]. Thus, smectic polymorphism is not unusual for mesogens with a terminal halogen substituent, and this has been frequently observed as the length of the alkyl or alkoxy chains increases [20,23].…”

“…Many mesogenic compounds containing heterocyclic rings such as pyridine, pyrimidine, furyl, thiazole, thiadiazole and oxadiazole have been reported in the literature [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. Significant interest in mesomorphic heterocyclic compounds [2] has dramatically increased due to their more diversified structural figures and distinct mesomorphic properties.…”
