Copper (Cu) and its alloys are prospective materials in fighting covid-19 virus and several microbial pandemics, due to its excellent antiviral as well as antimicrobial properties. Even though many studies have proved that copper and its alloys exhibit antiviral properties, this research arena requires further research attention. Several studies conducted on copper and its alloys have proven that copper-based alloys possess excellent potential in controlling the spread of infectious diseases. Moreover, recent studies indicate that these alloys can effectively inactivate the covid-19 virus. In view of this, the present article reviews the importance of copper and its alloys in reducing the spread and infection of covid-19, which is a global pandemic. The electronic databases such as ScienceDirect, Web of Science and PubMed were searched for identifying relevant studies in the present review article. The review starts with a brief description on the history of copper usage in medicine followed by the effect of copper content in human body and antiviral mechanisms of copper against covid-19. The subsequent sections describe the distinctive copper based material systems such as alloys, nanomaterials and coating technologies in combating the spread of covid-19. Overall, copper based materials can be propitiously used as part of preventive and therapeutic strategies in the fight against covid-19 virus.

Several human coronaviruses (HCoVs) are distinguished by the ability to generate epidemics or pandemics, with their corresponding diseases characterized by severe respiratory illness, such as that which occurs in severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS‐CoV), Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS‐CoV), and, today, in SARS‐CoV‐2, an outbreak that has struck explosively and uncontrollably beginning in December 2019 and has claimed the lives of more than 1.9 M people worldwide as of January 2021. The development of vaccines has taken one year, which is why it is necessary to investigate whether some already‐existing alternatives that have been successfully developed in recent years can mitigate the pandemic's advance. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have proved effective in antiviral action. Thus, in this review, several in vitro and in vivo studies of the effect of AgNPs on viruses that cause respiratory diseases are analyzed and discussed to promote an understanding of the possible interaction of AgNPs with SARS‐CoV‐2. The study focuses on several in vivo toxicological studies of AgNPs and a dose extrapolation to humans to determine the chief avenue of exposure. It can be concluded that the use of AgNPs as a possible treatment for SARS‐CoV‐2 could be viable, based on comparing the virus' behavior to that of similar viruses in in vivo studies, and that the suggested route of administration in terms of least degree of adverse effects is inhalation. Introduction Low oxygen saturation may persist in COVID-19 patients even after hospital discharge, requiring continued supplemental oxygen therapy at home. In this paper, we report the significant benefits of add on Ayurvedic intervention as observed in an oxygen dependent COVID-19 patient in the post hospitalization period. Main symptoms and important clinical findings : A 75-year-old gentleman approached his Ayurvedic general practitioner with complaints of low oxygen saturation and oxygen dependency five days after being discharged from hospital, where he was treated for COVID-19 related bilateral pneumonitis and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome as well as Acute Renal Failure. Patient reported breathing difficulty, generalized weakness, reduced appetite and severe constipation. Pulse Oximetry readings were fluctuating between 80 and 85% even with home oxygen support. Blood pressure was found to be 150/100 mm Hg, LDH slightly raised at 463 IU/L and HbA1c at 8.7 % indicated poor control of diabetes. The patient was administered micro-doses of a combination of Ayurvedic formulations sublingually every ten minutes for one day. This was followed by administration of Indukāntaṃ Ghṛtaṃ and Suvarṇamālinī Vasanta Rasa , Oxygen saturation improved to 95% in about twelve hours. He was weaned off oxygen support on the third day of starting Ayurvedic treatment, which was three weeks earlier than prescribed at the time of discharge from the hospital. Patient is ambulant and maintaining oxygen saturation levels between 95-98%. Conclusion This case report highlights the potential of a specific Ayurvedic intervention for better management of hypoxia persisting in the post hospitalization phase of patients managed with conventional medicine for COVID-19 related complications. Well-designed studies are warranted to confirm the benefits and explore the possibility of integrating such interventions appropriately with standard of care for management of COVID-19.
