To establish the constitutive model of original bamboo, the tensile and compressive tests along the grain of original bamboo were investigated. The original bamboo was graded according to the elastic modulus, and a stress-strain constitutive model of original bamboo was proposed. The results of the study show that the tensile failure mode of original bamboo along the grain is brittle failure, and the compression along the grain is ductile failure. The bamboo was divided into three grades I, II, and III, and the proportion of II and II was more than 80%. A linear constitutive model was used for tension along the grain of original bamboo, a “three-fold” model was used for simplified constitutive model for compression along the grain, and the Sargin model was used for accurate constitutive model. The classification method proposed in this paper can result in the efficient utilization of bamboo resources, and the proposed constitutive model can promote the analysis and engineering application of original bamboo architecture.

Evaluating the ultimate bearing capacity of glued laminated bamboo hollow columns under eccentric compression

To improve the utilization rate of bamboo, glued laminated bamboo hollow column (GLBHC) was examined under eccentric compression to study the effects of different slenderness ratios, eccentric distances, and wall thicknesses on its ultimate bearing capacity. The nonlinear deformation of the material and the P-delta effect of the column occur under eccentric compression, which can affect its ultimate bearing capacity, so it is very important to analyze the elastic-plastic buckling of the column. Moreover, the discontinuity of the hollow column section aggravates the nonlinear deformation. To accurately estimate the ultimate bearing capacity of GLBHC, considering the difference in tensile and compression elastic modulus, two eccentric compression models were established. A formula for ultimate bearing capacity of the GLBHC under eccentric compression was proposed, and the calculated results were in good agreement with the test results.

Composite columns are used to increase the strength for a given cross sectional dimension; stiffness leading to reduced slenderness and buckling resistance, corrosion and fire resistance in the case of concrete encased columns. Also, they provide a formwork for concrete filled steel tubes and economical solutions with regard to material costs. They are effectively started to use in the world. This study presents the dynamic and static behavior assessment of a steel covered column. In the content of the study, full concrete filled rectangular steel tube column as a composite column is selected for numerical analysis and its finite element model is constituted using ANSYS software. Dynamic behavior of the model is obtained performing modal analysis. The natural frequencies and mode shapes are obtained as dynamic characteristics to understand dynamic behavior. Then the model is statically performed. In static analysis, both of vertical and lateral loads are applied to models. The displacement and stress changes in some critical nodes and sections and contour diagrams are reported by graphs and figures after static analysis.
